only myself to beat - a first-time marathoner's training blog
by Liz McAuley
Every week I hope to give you a glimpse into my running world. I will try to explain things I have thought, learned and experienced while exploring my limits and working towards what at this moment seems unreachable.
My training schedule is designed simply. I run short distances and then gradually increase the mileage until the date of the marathon. The pre-training phase is designed to get my skeletal system used to the trauma of training and to decrease the chance of sustaining an injury. Both of these programs come from the book "The Non-Runner's Marathon Trainer" by Whitsett, Dolgener and Kole.
